This, the first of two open-air concerts in this year's Festival, will break entirely new ground, as far as both artists and venue are concerned.. For the very first time the atmospheric inner courtyard of the National Trust's Newton House will play host to a public performance. ( an often-expressed wish of the Festival's first Patron and an idea which has been enthusiastically supported by the new Patron, the present Lord Dynevor) This will be given by a virtuoso jazz ensemble containing no less than the entire brass section of the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, together with some of Wales's finest jazz musicians. The band was formed as recently as 2007 and at Newton House it will play not only some of the best-loved jazz standards in the repertoire but also a selection of well-known hymns and gospel music, big-band style.
Julie Dunn is regarded as one of Britain's leading female jazz vocalists and this, the first Festival venture of its kind, should be an evening never to forget.
